CONTENT

Speech Work: Intonation practice command and Request

Intonation is used to show the position of stress in a word . It is used to sow where or place a speaker lay more emphasis on the syllable of the word that is pronounce ” There are two types of intonation which are rising intonation and falling intonation

A command is a word or sentence that is used to express a sentence in which an action or obedience is expected

When giving out command , the expected voice intonation is falling intonation

A rising intonation pattern would be used typically for questions or for lists.

jump up

don’t stop

shut up

 

When making request  , the expected voice of intonation is rising  intonation

Falling intonation, this downward intonation tends to be used for exclamation, statements and commands and at the end of our sentences.

Read this dialogue of commands and responses, in pairs of different pupils, using the correct intonation.

Keeping clean and tidy

Teacher: Isa, show me your hands and nails.

Isa: Here are they, sir.

Teacher: Your hands and nails are dirty. Go and wash them immediately. Don’t spread germs in the class.

Isa: Okay, Sir. I’ll do that right away.

Teacher: Class, stand up. I want to check your hands and nails.

Dipo: Sir, I’ve just washed my hands and cut my nails.

Teacher: Sit down. Good boy. Read your books while I check your classmates’ hand and nails.

Igwe: Sir, it’s time to take a short break.

Teacher: Ring the bell.

What is a phrasal verbs ?

A phrasal verb is a group of word that is a combination of a verb and an adverb .  Phrasal verbs are always used in conversations, and that makes them essential to mastering the language.   Phrasal verbs will help you express yourself with a lot more ease , Phrasal verbs are phrases that indicate actions. They are generally used in spoken English and informal texts. Examples of such verbs include: turn down, come across , run into., take after , put in , sit for , look for , look up ,

 

Function Of Phrasal Verbs 

Phrasal verbs are used ad idiomatic expression  although some of they may have literally ordinary meaning

Agu looked up for the meaning of the  new word in the dictionary

Comprehension

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow

What is the purpose of learning? What is the importance of the whole process. What benefit does it really entail to have education?

Learning is an act in which something e.g idea, information, knowledge or doctrine is passed on from one person to another.

Education is the process or act of imparting these knowledge or skills

But what is the essence of the whole process when our educational system makes us to be job-seekers instead of job-creators.

Skill acquisition programmes, vocational training and entrepreneurship should be introduced into the school programmes so that our youths will become better and well equipped future leaders.

D. Grammar: Use of “so…that” to express personal Opinion

Using ‘so … that’

Use ‘so that’ to say you do something in order to make something else happen

Example: We finished our homework so that we could watch TV.

Remember, ‘so’ + adjective + ‘that’ has a completely different meaning. Example:

It was so heavy that I couldn’t lift it. You can leave out ‘that’. Example: It was so

heavy I couldn’t lift it.

EXERCISE

Write one sentence using the first sentence, ‘so that’ and the information in brackets to help you.

Example: Drink lots of water when you exercise. (It’s hot and you get thirsty.)

Answer: Drink lots of water when you exercise so that you don’t get thirsty.

1 You must drink clean water. (Dirty water can make you ill.)

2 Could you pass me that pen? (I want to write down your phone number.)

3 Dad bought me a lamp. (It’s dark and I can’t read in my bedroom.)

4 I’m saving my money. (I want to buy a new CD.)

5 Funmi must eat her food. (She cannot take her tablets unless she has eaten.)

Personal opinion is an individual view on some facts in lives . Someone may support or oppose a general statement based on someone strong views
