What is an ethnic group?

 

An ethnic group consists of people with the same cultural background who speak the same language

 

What are the major ethnic groups in Nigeria?

 

The three major ethnic groups in Nigeria are

Yoruba

Igbo and

Hausa

 

Do we have other minority ethnic groups in Nigeria

Yes there are lots of minor ethnic groups in Nigeria which are Ijaw, itsekiri, egun, awori, fulani, just to mention a few of them

 

What is Inter ethnic marriage?

 

Inter ethnic marriage simply refers to a type of marriage between two different ethnic groups

For instance when Mallam Abu (an Hausa man) marries Miss Chioma (an igbó lady)

Advantages of Inter Ethnic Marriage

• There is a display of cultural diversity and unity between the family members of the newly wedded couples
• It fosters national unity and eliminates tribalism or ethnicity
• It makes us to know more about other people’s culture and customs

Disadvantages of Inter Ethnic Marriage

• Language misunderstanding
• The couples may find it difficult to communicate in another native dialect
• There may be disunity or suspicious in the family
• The culture of each partner may look strange and unfamiliar to each couple

 

What is intra ethnic marriage?

 

Intra ethnic marriage is a type of marriage when Mr Akinola (a Yoruba man) marries Miss Ayinla (a Yoruba woman)

 

Merits of Intra ethnic marriage 

• There is no language barrier
• The couples understand each other because they speak the same native indigenous language
• The is unity between the family members of both couples because they understand each other
• They practice the customs and tradition
• They have the same cultural background

Demerits of Intra Ethnic Marriage

• No privacy or intimacy between the two newly wedded couples as everybody understands whatever messages the couples want to pass to each other.
• Undue and unnecessary interference from family members, friends and relatives
• Mother in laws

Intra ethnic marriage is a type of marriage between two people of the same ethnic group when an igbo man marries an igbo woman.
