Sub-Topic 1: Classification of Traditional musical instruments

Traditional musical instruments are classified into four: membranophone, idiophone, chordophone and aerophone.

Membranophone: Membranophone are the musical instrument that produced by animal skin, either covered with the local pot or carved wood and struck with the stick or palm of the hand e.g. Omele, Iya ilu, Udu, Bata, Gangan etc

 

Maintenances: Membranophone instruments should be kept in a dry place, the local pot type is fragile therefore it should be handled with care. Its only palm of hand and short stick that is allow to use for trucking not sharp object.

Aerophone:Aerophoneare the musical instrument that are producing sound through the aid of blowing air into a tube or pipe direct by the player e.g. Kakaki, Ipe, Animal horn, pawpaw leaf stick, Oja etc

 

Maintenances: Aerophone is handled and taken-off by individual player. It should be clean and dusty with soft and dry cloth and it should handle with care because is a fragile i.e. its can easily break or crack.

 

Idiophone: Idiophone are the self sounding instrument which produce sound by shaking or struck by hand or with stick e.g. Agogo, sekere, Gong, ekpere etc.

Maintenance; some idiophone instruments are fragile which can easily brake e.g. Sekere and ekpere, therefore its should be handled with care while the other should be kept away from water or moisture to avoid rust because they are all metals.

 

Chordophone: Chordophone is an instrument that are produce sound through the aid of rope or stringed, the stringed may be six, four, three or two. The stringed can be struck with hand e.g.

Goje, Musical bow, Banjo

Maitanance:The stringed or rope of chordophone should be struck with care to avoid cutting or brake and the turning should be done with careful

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

Traditional musical instruments have less problem because of view accessories that its involve. The only problem of membranophone has is the tearing of animal skin and braking of the pot or carve wood. The idiophone problem is breaking of the calabash of sekere and the rusty of Agogo will bring about of sound production if touched with water or moisture while the chordophone problem is the stringed and the bow

TOOLS FOR REPAIR IN A TECHNOLOGICAL WORKSHOP

The musical instruments are numerous which cut across various cultures. Broadly, they can be divided or classified into two categories:

  1. Western musical instruments
  2. African musical instruments

 

It’s the western musical instruments that can requires technological knowledge to repair if it is faulty hence the institutions must have workshop where the faulty instruments should be taken to for repair by trained experts. Some of the tools are: spanner, screwdrivers, hammer, pointed noise pliers, sow ding iron and spare parts of the musical instruments etc.

The Traditional musical instruments does not require technological experts or imported parts but can be replaced easily because they are made of local materials like animal skin, local pot, carved wood, animal horns etc
