What is modern marriage ?
Modern marriage is the type of marriage that is done in accordance with the prevailing laws, fashion or dictates of the society during the period of marriage. It is often referred to as society wedding with all the elaborate funfair and celebration. It is the second phase of marriage that is done by most people in Nigeria because before they can perform Christian or moslem marriage, the intending couples would have travelled back home to village to do the traditional marriage.
What are the types of Modern Marriage
Christian or church marriage : This type of marriage is done in accordance with the Christian doctrine or teachings. The wedding is done in the church.
Characteristics of Christian or Church Marriage
1.Marriage is based on Christian doctrine, principles and teaching
2. Christian marriage allows monogamous which means that a man is allowed to marry only one wife
3. Christian marriage is done in the church and the officiating priest will announce that who wants to give out this lady as wife….
4. Bible is used as the word of God to admonish the intending couples
5. Reception and entertainment of guests in always done after the holy matrimony
Moslem or Islam : This type of marriage is done in accordance to Islamic doctrines, teachings and principles.
Characteristics of Moslem Marriage
1. There must be witness from both couples family for the marriage to be valid
2. The parents of the bride must give the consent and approval
3. The marriage is done on accordance with Moslem teachings
4. The marriage may take place in a hall or under the canopy
5. Quran is used as the word of God to feed the intending couples
Marriage by Ordinance or Court marriage
This type of marriage is down in accordance with the norms and laws of the law. It is the type of marriage in which marriage certificate is issued by the marriage registry
Characteristics of Marriage by Ordinance or Court Marriage
1. It is done in the marriage registry
2. Marriage certificate is issued.
3. It makes the marriage to become a legal entity in which any of the two couples can sue or be sued in the need arises
4. Court marriage supports monogamous marriage
