Ordering Of Fractions

Subject : Mathematics

Topic : Ordering Of Fractions

Class : Primary 6

Content

Fractions are parts of whole numbers. They are the division of whole numbers. The number that is up is called the numerator while the number that is down is called the denominator

Examples of Fractions are : 4/3, 11/4, 7/7, 1/2 etc

Note that Fractions may be either proper, improper or mixed numbers.

To order Fractions, you will need to convert the Fractions in such a way that they have a common denominator

Steps to compare and order fractions, integers and mixed numbers

1. Convert integers and mixed numbers to improper fractions

2. Find the least common denominator LCM of all the fractions

3.using the LCM

4. Order the new fractions by the numerator

5. Match original inputs to the ordered fractions to see the final order

Example : Arrange the following Fractions in ascending order of magnitude 3/5, 1/8 and 1/4

Solution

1. You will need to calculate the LCM of the denominators of the Fractions

You will need to calculate the LCM of 5,8 and 4

Solution : LCM of 5 8 and 4 = 40

2. Multiply each of the fraction by the LCM

(3/5) * 40 = 24

(1/8) * 40 = 5

(1/4) * 40 = 10

5…… 10……..24……

1/8….. 1/4……..3/5….. Ans

Evaluation

Arrange these Fractions in ascending order

1. 2/4….3/7…..1/5

2. 1/2……1/4……1/5

3. 4/5……..3/8………3/4
