These were my words as I dragged my feet shamefully homeward from school. I had just been prevented from writing my promotion examinations because I have not paid the balance of ten naira of the forty-five naira tuition. My father died a year ago and my mother a full time housewife, had no money to complete the tuition. My father’s siblings all women have taken over everything he left behind.

They sold the three and a half bags of cocoa. The disposed of the motorcycle, the sewing machine and the roofing sheets he bought to roof the house he was building. There was no one to help. I was completely naked. The trauma went on for two days until a woman whose name I could no longer remember gave me the money to pay although I had missed three subjects. The free education of the following two years of my five-year secondary education saved me from another harrowing experience that would have compelled me to stop schooling.

Twenty years after, as an adult, married and employed, I was the leader, the coordinator and adviser of the youths in my locality. As I told the 150 seated youths and adults, my guests my biography, many people shed tears while many others really cried. Everyone’s mouth was open as they learnt that I had no sponsor throughout school. Much more pathetic was that I had to become a farmhand to some families to get a few basic needs of life. When I told the audience that for seven days, at a point in time in the university, I ate only pawpaw which I got from only fallow lands at the campus they marveled and asked whether that was possible.
