Set Induction (Humanized)

I usually start this class with a smile and a simple question: “If you had to take your friend on a tour of this school, where would you take them first and why?”

One child once pointed at our little playground and said, “That’s where I laugh the most!” Another proudly said, “My class, because I like writing my name on the board.” That small prompt opens the door for stories, and from stories, we build writing skills.

Entry Behavior

Pupils already interact with their school daily. Most can point out their classroom, the gate, or even “the auntie who gives us food.” This familiarity forms the foundation for today’s writing.

Learning Resources and Materials

  • Printed pictures of the school environment (e.g., classroom, library, playground)

  • Flashcards with keywords

  • A chart showing school activities

  • Pupils’ notebooks and pencils

Building Background / Connection to Prior Knowledge

Before writing, I’ll lead a chat about what school means. I’ll share a short personal story:

“When I was your age, my school was a one-storey building in Ibadan. I still remember the scent of chalk and the noise during break time. I didn’t know it then, but my favorite place was under the mango tree near our assembly ground—we used to gather there for storytelling after class.”

That story usually gets the children thinking. Then I’ll ask: What do you remember most about our school?

“My house is small and painted blue.”

Step 2: Introducing the New Topic

I’ll say: “Now let’s talk about a place you know very well—your school.” I’ll point to the board where pictures of our classroom, playground, and school signpost are pasted.

Step 3: Guided Writing

Pupils will say what they know, and I’ll help frame it into full sentences. For example:
Child: “We play there.”
Teacher: “Good! Let’s write: We play on the playground at break time.

Conclusion

As I collect their compositions, I give each child feedback—pointing out one thing they did well and one area to improve. Then I pick 2–3 volunteers to read theirs aloud. Some giggle, some beam with pride. That’s how I know they’re not just learning to write—they’re learning to express themselves.
