Definition of a Preposition

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in a sentence.

Example:

  • The pen is on the table.
  • She arrived before noon.

Types of Prepositions and Examples

  1. Prepositions of Place (Where something is located)

    • Examples: on, in, under, behind, beside, between, near
    • Sentences:
      • The cat is under the chair.
      • The school is beside the market.
  2. Prepositions of Time (When something happens)

    • Examples: at, on, in, before, after, during, since
    • Sentences:
      • The meeting starts at 10 a.m.
      • I was born in December.
  3. Prepositions of Movement (Direction or motion)
