Meaning of life drawing

Life drawing is the drawing of humans. It entails drawing a human in any posture. It can either be a human sitting down, standing up or lying on a couch. It is also called figure drawing. The drawing of humans requires mastery of the proportions of the different parts of the body in relation to the other parts. These proportions of the different parts of the body in relation to the other parts vary with age. For example, for an average adult, the height of the head is about 71/2 times the height of the person. This picture is a good example of life drawing.

Pry 5 creative Art 1st Term

Types of life drawing Portrait drawing

This is the drawing of humans from the chest up to the head. This can be drawn directly from a model (a person) who poses for it, or model based on a photograph. It is, however, advisable to work from a photograph when doing portrait drawing. This is because a model may not be able to maintain the same pose and the required facial expression for a long time. Portrait drawing could be the drawing of a single figure or more. In portrait drawing, it is very

important that the artist should produce a drawing that is an exact resemblance of the model or the photograph.

Full-figure drawing

Full-figure drawing is the drawing of the complete human body (in the right proportions). A model is used for this purpose in an art class. A model is a professional person employed to pose in different positions and attires for the artist to draw.

Composition-figure drawing

This is the drawing of two or more human figures involved in an activity. Examples of such activities include cultural activities, market scenes, sports activities, and political rallies.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

1 state the meaning of life drawing; 2 draw a full human figure;

3 identify different parts of the body.

WRAP-UP (CONCLUSION): Teacher goes over the topic once again for better understanding.

ASSIGNMENT

  • What is life drawing?
  • Explain the different types of life drawing.
  • Give four examples of composition–figure drawing.

Meaning of imaginative drawing

Imaginative drawing is a type of drawing that is based on the creative ability of the artist. Here, the artist thinks about an imaginary scene or situation and tries to present it in drawing. Skills required for this type of drawing include mastery of the human proportions, mastery of the use of various art media, confidence in oneself, and creative thinking.

A good artist can draw the following kinds of scenes very well, based on his or her ability to imagine what they really look like in real life:

1 Traffic jam, 2 Market scene

3 Political rally 4 Football match

Meaning of fabric decoration

Fabric decoration is the act of creating designs with color on plain fabric. This is with the intention of making the fabric look more beautiful and attractive.

Tie and dye

Tie and dye is a fabric decoration technique that is common in Abeokuta,Ogun State, Nigeria. It is a process of creating a dye-resist area in a fabric before soaking it in a solution of dye. Tie and dye designs can be simple or complex. They can be of a single color (monochrome), or multicolored. The extent to which the design is complex is determined by the creativity and experience of the artist.

Other techniques of fabric decoration include printing, embroidery, painting, and appliqué.

Methods of decorating fabric by tie and dye

The basic essence of tie and dye is to create some parts of the fabric that will resist dye during the dying process. This can be achieved by the following methods:

  • Folding: This is the act of folding the fabric into different shapes; then using a twine to tie it together, so

as to keep it in position.

  • Tying: This involves the tying of stones, buttons or marbles of different sizes into the fabric; then using strings to hold them together. After doing this, it is ready for dyeing.
  • Twisting and coiling: This method involves twisting the fabric very tight, either by one or two persons; then, tying it in various places with strings.
  • Marbling: This is the method of crumpling the fabric until it is smaller and forms a tight ball; then, tying it very tightly with strings.
  • Stamping: This is the method of applying fabric paint to a stamp, and then placing it on the fabric. The paint is then left to dry up.

Making tie and dye fabrics

The dyeing process before proceeding to mix the components together, it is important to bear in mind that all the main components (dye, hydrogen sulphate and caustic soda) are dangerous and not fit for human consumption. Again, dye spillage must be thoroughly washed off with water. Also, all utensils used must be properly and thoroughly washed. Now, study the following stages of dyeing:

Stage 1

Measure hydrogen sulphate and caustic soda in the ratio of 2:1 respectively, depending on the quantity of the fabric to be dyed. The quantity of dye to be used is for the artist to decide, depending on the colour intensity that he or she

wants to achieve. The hydrogen sulphate, caustic soda and dye must be measured into an empty and dry plastic bowl.

Stage 2

Add hot water gradually into the chemical mixture in the bowl and stir properly to ensure that everything dissolves.

Stage 3

Dip the fabric into the dye mixture solution and allow it to absorb the dye for about 20 minutes. Care must be taken to ensure that every part of the fabric absorbs the dye evenly.

Stage 4

Remove the fabric and allow the excess dye to drip off. Rinse the dyed fabric in clean water and spread to dry under a shade.
