Nigeria is a country made up of 36 states and one big city called the federal capital territory. Each state has its own leader and government, but they also work together with the federal government. This is written in Nigeria’s rules, called the constitution.

A long time ago, Nigeria was divided into four big areas called regions. But in 1967, the leaders at the time changed it and made 12 states instead. Later, more states were added until there were 36 states. Some of these states were created by military leaders, like General Ibrahim Babangida and General Sani Abacha.

Here is a list of the states and when they were created, and who created them:

12 states were made in 1976 by General Murtala Mohammed 27 May 1967 General Yakubu Gowon made 10 states General Ibrahim Babangida made 2 states in 1987 and 9 states in 1991 General Sani Abacha made 6 states in 1996
