Types of Traditional Music in Lagos

Lagos state is a place in Nigeria and people there love to listen to music. There are different types of music that they listen to.

  1. Highlife: This type of music is lively and makes people happy and dance. Imagine you’re at a party with your friends, and you’re all dancing to a highlife song!
  2. Fuji: This is a type of music that comes from the Yoruba people in Lagos. It’s played with a drum and a flute, and people often dance to it. Think of it as music that makes you want to move your feet and dance!
  3. Apala: This is another type of music that comes from the Yoruba people. It’s usually slow and people sing along to it. Imagine you’re at a picnic with your family, and everyone is singing together to an apala song.

Sakara music combines two different types of sounds. It mixes the way people sing in Eastern Africa and the Middle East with African drum beats. The music is usually deep and makes you think about big ideas. There are two special instruments used in Sakara music – the Goje violin and the Sakara drum. A man named Abibu Oluwa was one of the first people to play this type of music in Lagos and he started playing it in the 1930s.
