WEEK FIVE
TOPIC: -DRAWING AND SHADING. (STILL-LIFE AND NATURE DRAWING).
Drawing of man-made objects.
Using the elements and principle of art in drawing (proposition, balance and forms).
Content.
STILL-LIFE DRAWING: – This is the drawing of inanimate or lifeless objects such as bottles, shoes, buckets, etc. It is also drawing of unmovable objects that vary in size and shape. In this form of drawing, objects are arranged for careful study and representation.
These objects can be natural or artificial (man-made).
Examples of artificial objects are bags, cars, tins, shoes, lanterns, stoves, pots, farm tools, electrical appliance among many others.
The elements of art in drawing are: line, shape, form, space, value, and color. The principles of art in drawing are: balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity.
Proposition is the arrangement of elements in a composition to create a desired effect. Balance is the use of various design elements to create visual stability in a drawing. Forms are the three-dimensional representation of objects in space.
WHAT IS STILL-LIFE COMPOSITION?
A still-life composition is a work of art that features static, inanimate objects as its primary subject matter. Historically, still-life paintings and drawings were largely created for their utilitarian function: to teach artists how to render various materials such as fruits, flowers, vegetables, glassware, metalwork, and so on. However, many still-lifes created for this purpose were also highly beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, and as a result, they became popular as works of art in their own right.
One of the most famous still-life paintings is “Natures mortes à la campagne” (“Still Life in a Landscape”) by French artist Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). This painting features a table laden with fruits, vegetables, and other objects, set against a backdrop of mountains and trees. Cézanne’s painting is an example of how still-life paintings can be both highly realistic and incredibly beautiful at the same time.
