TOPIC: TRADITIONAL NIGERIAN ART
NOK CULTURES
Nok got its name from a small village NOK in Kaduna state. It was Bernard Fagg who named the art works after the village. The Nok culture has been dated conservatively to between 500BC and 200AD.
Nok cultures are characterized by their distinctive art styles, which include highly stylized figures that are often elongated and have large heads. These figures typically depict human beings and animals, and they are often found on pottery vessels and other objects. Nok cultures also produced a type of terra cotta head that is thought to represent a deceased individual. These heads are often decorated with elaborate hairstyles and facial features, and they are believed to have been used in burial rituals.
CHARACTERISTICS OF NOK CULTURES

IGBO-UKWU ART
Igbo Ukwu is an Igbo village where a sculpture tradition and an archaeological site was discovered first in 1938 by Isaiah Anozie at Awka village in Anambra. The igbo ukwu objects were the highest singular excavations of about 800 pieces. The object were discovered mainly from three sites, namely Igbo Isaiah, Igbo-Richards and Igbo-Jonah.
CHARACTERISTICS OF IGBO-UKWU ART
1.Heavily decorated with spiral lines ,and rope.
- Decorative bronze snail shell and bowl
3 .Mainly household utensils.
4.Intricate design and details.
- Naturalism.
Dating:- 840-850 AD.
Thurstan Shaw carried out some excavations at different site and buried chambers.

IFE ART
Ife is in Osun State ,it is the traditional home of Yoruba. The art of is in terracotta ,bronze, and stone .First discovered in 1910 by Leo Frobenius an ethnographer through radio carbon method. Ife art terracottas are very naturalistic.

CHARACTERISTICS OF IFE ART
1.Very Naturalistic.
2.Holes represent hairs around the moustache and head.
3.Lines running down the face (Scarification or Striation).
4.Eyes are round in their sockets.
5.The beaded crown has plume on forehead.
- Their bronze works are in cire-perdue.
Cire-perdue is a system of using lost wax, it is a method of casting with metals.
BENIN ART
This is basically a court art,it is an art done for the pleasure and honour of the king and decoration of the palace . It is otherwise kown as man regarding art.The works were done in wood, iron , brass and bronze. Cire perdue ( Lost wax ) method is used to cast their bronze work.
CHARACTERISTICS :-
- Mostly royal figures ( Court art).
- Beaded neck.
- Highly decorative.
- Only art culture that has ivory.
- Semi
- Appearance of British soldier.
Dating:- 14th -15th Century.
TSOEDE ART
This are the artworks found among Nupe people in Tada village in Niger State.The work are basically made of bronze and they have close resemblance to some works in Ife art in terms of naturalism , realism , and bronze casting method.
CHARACTERISTICS :-
1.The biggest bronze work in the South of Sahara.
2.Share common features with Ife art.
ESIE STONE FIGURES
Esie is a Yoruba town , not far from Ilorin in Kwara State. The art works are about 800 large pieces carved from soapstone (soft stone) , which was discovered by a German archaeologist, Leo Frobenius.
BRASSWORK
This is a metal craft popular in Bida , art pieces especially jewelry ,bowls, trays are made from the alloy of tin and copper . There is a large deposit of tin and core around the Bida –Jos axis, this gives the opportunity of smelting and fabricating thme into beautiful bangle, bracelets ,anklet and various ornamentals.
FUNCTION OF NIGERIAN TRADITIONAL ART
1.They hold the cultural heritage of the society.
- They are used for historical purposes.
- They are used for social purposes.
4.They are a means of livelihood for craftsmen.
5.They are used for domestic purposes.
6.They help in enforcing community authority.
REASON FOR PRESERVING ART
Art works are preserved because art and culture are inseparable, therefore art is a mouth -piece that shows and explains the culture of the people in a society .It also helps in keeping of the cultural heritage . It is also a bridge between the past and the future.
It helps people to know their history, the mistakes of the past and the solution for the future .
