Reporting verbs

Learn this: We can report a statement, question, command, thought, etc. We often use ‘tell’ and ‘ask’ when we report something, but there are many other verbs that we can use.

Write down these reporting verbs. Learn the meaning of any one you do not know. Then, write your own sentence using each reporting verb.

Structure: The past tense

Simple past tense

The simple past tense is used to express an action or event that happened and ended in the past. It is usually used with words that tell us when something happened, for example: a while ago, last week, yesterday, last year, last month. Every verb has only one form in the past. For example, the past tense of ‘walk’ is ‘walked’. It doesn’t change in any situation. To change the basic verb (infinitive) into its past tense form, we add ‘–ed’, ‘–d’ to the end of the verb.

Examples:

jump – jumped

work – worked

like – liked

love – loved

cook – cooked

1 The cat jumped over the fence.

2 We worked throughout yesterday.

3 Jumai cooked a delicious dinner last night.

4 Linda watched movies all night.

5 She looked great in her new uniform.

6 I liked oranges.

Some verbs are not regular in their past form. You have to learn these carefully.

Examples:

drive – drove shake – shook

fight – fought send – sent

buy – bought bite – bit

go – went

eat – ate
