SUB-TOPIC 1: JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF GOD. Rom.8:3, 17, 32

Jesus Christ the son of God is the foundation of Christian faith. Jesus’ son ship of God sets Him apart from the other messengers of God, such as Elisha, Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, etc.

During the annunciation as recorded by St Luke, the Angel revealed to Mary that the child to be born will be called the son of the Most High (Luke 1:32). At the baptism of Jesus, a voice from heaven introduced Jesus as the son of God. This was repeated at the transfiguration.

Jesus also recognized himself as the son of God and on many occasions referred to God as His father. At the raising of Lazarus from the dead, Jesus referred to God as His father (John 11: 45). Also, at Gethsemane during his prayer of agony, Jesus called God His father. In the same way on the cross, He referred to God as his father ‘Father into thy hand I commit my spirit’ (Luke 23:46).

The gospel of John started with the emphasis on Jesus as the son of God. ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God….’ This means that Jesus existed as the son of God before incarnation.

SUB-TOPIC 2: CHRISTIANS ARE ALSO CHILDREN OF GOD. Rom.8:1-39, 4:6, 7; Eph.5:3

God sent Jesus into the world in human form so as to die on the cross for mankind’s redemption. If we accept His death and resurrection as believers, we become God’s children and heirs of God’s kingdom with Jesus. It also qualifies believers as God’s adopted sons and no longer slaves to the forces of the world.

‘And because ye are sons, God sent his spirit into our hearts crying Abba! Father! so through God, you are no longer a slave but a son and if a son, then an heir, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him’. ( Romans 8:16-17)

The fundamental facts in Paul teaching is that God sent his son to save man from the bondage of the law. Also those who have faith in Christ share the same attribute with Christ so that as Christ is the son of God, the believers by virtue of their belief are children of God through adoption. In other words, Christians become the children of God through adoption.
