SUB TOPIC1:

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. John 3:19; 8:12; 9:4-5;

With three instances, Jesus describes Himself as the light of the world. In the first instance he had an encounter with Nicodemus. During this encounter Jesus said, “And this is the Judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil “John 3:19. Jesus also mentioned that evil doers hates the light so as not to expose their evil ways. According to Jesus, whoever lives in the truth loves the light so that it will be clear that his deeds are done through God.

Again, shortly after Jesus discharged the woman caught in adultery, He taught the people,

saying, “Iam the Light of the world: he who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life”. John 8:12

Finally Jesus declared to His followers that He is the light of the world as long as He is in the world. This was in response to His disciples’ question on the blind man Jesus healed“And his disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned , this man or his parents, that he was blind”. John 9:2 Jesus answered them that it was not the man that sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be made manifest in him.

Jesus then declared,“As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” John 9:5

The light, which is the truth, tells us our responsibilities to God and the consequences of living in sin.

EVALUATION:

‘As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world’.(John 9:5)

(a) Narrate the event that led to the above statement? (b)What is the lesson in the statement?

2. WALKING IN THE LIGHT AS A CHILD OF GOD. John 12:35-36; 1 John 1:5-7

The condition of a Christian is to walk in the light. This implies that every Christian should live according to what he or she believes. Jesus said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with his saliva and anointed the man’s eyes with the clay, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went away and washed and came back seeing.” John 9:5-7

Also, Jesus told his disciples that “while you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said this, he departed and hid himself from them.” John 12:36

SUB TOPIC 2: WALKING IN THE LIGHTJohn12:35-36

When we receive the teaching of Jesus, which is the truth or the light, we should make use of it by living according to it. We should do the will of God (his works), for we will not be able to work when night comes, and when it would have been too late.

CONSEQUENCES OF WALKING IN DARKNESSJohn.12:35-36; 1John 1:5-7
