Content :
Print awareness is a child’s earliest introduction to literacy. This topic will help the children understand that print is organised in a particular way.
For example, they will learn that print is read from left to right and from top to bottom.
They will also learn that words consist of letters and that they must be a space after each word.
When the children are aware of this concept of print, they will understand that when adults read a book, what they say is linked to the words on the page not to the pictures.
They should be able to know the difference between a letter, a word and a sentence.
It makes the pupils to know that the whole essence of any print work is to convey ideas or thoughts through paper and ink with the use of letters and words for better understanding .
It will also make the pupils to understand the following :
That any print work has meaning or particular message that it wants to convey
That print can be used for different purposes like story telling , reading for fun or for informative and educative purpose
The relationship between print and speech and the ability of the child to turn letters to words
There is a difference between letters and words because words are made up of letters and letters are the smallest representation of sounds
That words are separated by spaces
There is a difference between words and sentences
That there are (punctuation) marks that signal the end of a sentence T.hey are the period, question mark, and exclamation point. The period (.) is placed at the end of declarative sentences, statements thought to be complete and after many abbreviations.
That books have parts such as a front and back cover, title page, and spine . The pages at the beginning and end of a book are called the endpapers or the endsheets.
That stories have a beginning, middle, and end
That text is read from left to right and from top to bottom
