General Effects of Diseases of Farm Animals
The following are the effects of diseases on farm animals:
- Reduced productivity
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of weight
- Death of animals
- Loss of body condition called emaciation
- Coughing and vomiting
- Reduction of economic value of the animals
- Reduction in nutritive value
- Retarded growth
- Diarrhea
- Transmission of disease to human beings.
- Increases cost of production
- Endangering human health e.g. zoonotic disease

General Methods of Prevention and Control of Farm Animals’ Diseases
Farm animals’ diseases can be generally prevented and controlled by the following methods:
- Good sanitation practices
- Isolation of sick animals
- Disposal of waste materials
- Immunization/vaccination of animals
- Remove or kill and burn/bury animals that are infected with disease
- Disinfection of livestock buildings and equipment.
- Burning of contaminated feed and other materials
- Avoid contamination of pasture with faeces of infected animal.
- Quarantine
- Use resistance breeds
- Seek the advice of veterinary doctors.
- Give animals’ balanced diet.
