WEEK 1
TOPIC : FOOD CONTAMINATION AND ADULTERATION
Food contamination means the presence of injurious or harmful chemicals and micro organisms in food which can cause illness for the consumer,
Food can be contaminated in any of the following ways;;
Exposure to dust
Exposure to flies and cockroaches,rats,etc
Inadequate washing of hands and fingernails in the process of preparing food or when food is being served.
Improper washing of utensils used in preparing other foods,
Exposure to animal or human wastes particularly vegetables and fruits
Washing of cooking utensils,vegetables and fruits with dirty water
Poor personal hygiene of those who prepare food
Improper handling ,preparing and storing g of food
Effects of contamination;
Food contamination can lead to food poisoning which can lead to death
Prevention of food contamination.
Hygienically preparing food
keeping raw foods separate from ready-to-eat food
constantly washing of hands and fingernails
Punishment for food contamination .
According to counterfeit and fake drugs and unwholesome processed foods Act,the punishment is;
A jail term of between 5 and 15 years or a fine of not more than N500,000 or both.
FOOD ADULTERATION;
Food adulteration is an act of intentionally reducing the quality of food by adding inferior substances or removing valuable ingredients, For instance, palm oil is adulterated if other substances are added to increase the content in order to make profit,

Palm oil
milk
Honey
fruit juice
coffee
Ground pepper
Reasons for increase in Existence of Adulterated food and drugs in Nigeria
Improper enforcement of existing laws against offenders
Effect of corruption
Greed and tendency to make fast money
High level of illiteracy

Sickness or poor health condition
Increase in death rate due to adulterated food
Decrease in life expectancy
Reduction in export for our goods
Decrease in foreign exchange earning
Bad image in the comity of nations
Punishment For ADULTERATION
it is determined by the court based on the gravity of the offence,
besides ,according to counterfeit and fake drugs and unwholesome processed foods,act, the punishment is a jail term of between 5 and 15 years or a fine of not more than N500,000 or both.
