What are wages ?
Wages are rewards for labour. Labour is man’s mental, social and physical effort that is directed towards the creation of goods and services that will satisfy consumers needs and wants.
Income is the money that is earned by creating a product or supplying good quality service.
Sources of income to a household may include any of the following
- Wages
- Salaries
- Rent from owned landed property
- Bonus
- Gifts
- Interest
- Dividend
Income may be paid daily which is known as wages or it may be paid monthly for some skilled workers and this is called salary

Why do different people earn different income
- Risks that are involved in the particular job
- The lengthy period of training that is required for some job like medicine or law
- Level of expertise or professionalism
- Hours of work
- Academic qualification
- Promotion on merit
Causes of Wage Increase
1. Persistence increase in the cost of goods and services
2. The activities of trade and labour unions are they try very hard to fix the income of their members for better lifestyles
3. Incentives by employers of labour in order to increase productivity or improve service delivery
4. Promotion of workers with exemplary outstanding performance on merit
