MEANING OF JUSTICE AND SELFLESSNESS

Justice delayed is justice denied

What is justice?

Justice simply means trying to right the wrong that has been done to any member of the society.

Justice is action according to the requirements of some law. It is fairness. It is action that pays due regard to the proper interests, property and safety of one’s fellows.

It is dealing with everybody equally without fair or favour in accordance with the stipulations of laws and orders of the land.

Justice is the bedrock on which every society is built.

Plato says that a just individual is someone whose soul is guided by a vision of the good.

Aristotle says that justice is giving a person his due. He says that when a person receives benefits according to his merit, such is justice.

Justice is action according to the requirements of some law. It is fairness. It is action that pays due regard to the proper interests, property and safety of one’s fellows.

Types of Justices

There are four types of justice that people can seek when they have been wronged.

1. Distributive Justice, also known as economic justice, is about fairness in what people receive, from goods to attention. Its roots are in social order and it is at the roots of socialism, where equality is a fundamental principle.

If people do not think that they are getting their fair share of something, they will seek first to gain what they believe they deserve. They may well also seek other forms of justice.

2. Procedural Justice is the principle of fairness is also found in the idea of “fair play” (as opposed to the “fair share” of distributive justice). It consists of treating people equally regardless of their racial or social status. Also, anyone who does the same wrong should be given the same penalty or punishment.

If people believe that a fair process was used in deciding what is to be distributed, then they may well accept an imbalance in what they receive in comparison to others. If they see both procedural and distributive injustice, they will likely seek restorative and/or retributive justice (the latter two to correct the former two).

3. Restorative Justice. The first thing that the betrayed person may seek from the betrayer is some form of restitution, putting things back as they should be.

The simplest form of restitution is a straightforward apology. Restoration means putting things back as they were, so it may include some act of contrition to demonstrate one is truly sorry. This may include action and even extra payment to the offended party.

Restorative justice is also known as corrective justice.

4. Retributive Justice works on the principle of punishment, although what constitutes fair and proportional punishment is widely debated. While the intent may be to dissuade the perpetrator or others from future wrong-doing, the re-offending rate (recidivism) of many criminals indicates the limited success of this approach.

IMPORTANCE OF JUSTICE

a. Truth:- Justice is importance because it stands for truth. When there is justice, the truth is projected. The right thing is seen to have done.

b. Peace: – Peace is defined as a state of affairs where no direct or physical violence, conflict or war quarrelling will not exist.

c. Divine Command: – Justice is a divine law. It emanates from God, we must uphold these values.

d. Mutual Agreement: – Justice is a mutual agreement of people concerned. It is created by the people themselves for their own good and that of the society.

e. Equality:- Justice brings equality. It makes everybody equal. There is no master-servant relationship. People deserve to be regarded for their effort and productivity, punished for heir basic needs met.

SELFLESNESS

Selflessness Is defined as having, exhibiting, or motivated by no concern for  Oneself personal interests or gains . It is the quality of unselfish concern for the welfare of others. Selflessness means we identify with others. We help others because we identify with their problems and their feelings It simply means burning out our candles at both ends to meet the needs of everybody as a whole in the society or country.

IMPORTANCE OF SELFLESS ACTIVITIES

a. Conquers Pride: – Selfless people act out of motivation to do the right thing and help others. By definition, selflessness cannot involve inflating our ego.

b. Expands our mind: – When we act only out of selfish motives we bind and limit ourselves. Every action, we calculate how we might benefit. However, when we act through selfless motives, we are something without serious thinking. This enables us to get joy from the achievement of others. It also enables us to get joy from serving others.

c. Attractive: – Selflessness is attractive. When we are really selfless, our actions will be appreciated in others.
