Definition of a state

Hello pupils ! Today, we are going to learn about the word “state”. In Nigerian history, a state refers to a region or territory that is governed by a central authority. This central authority is responsible for making laws, providing services like healthcare, education and security, and maintaining order within the state.

Let’s use an example to help us understand this better. Nigeria is made up of several states like Lagos, Kano, Rivers, and many others. Each of these states has its own governor, who is in charge of the state’s affairs. The governor is responsible for ensuring that the state’s resources are used wisely and that the people living in the state are well taken care of.

Another example is the colonial period in Nigeria. Before Nigeria became an independent country, it was divided into several regions or states, which were each governed by a British colonial administrator. These administrators were responsible for maintaining law and order, and for ensuring that the resources of the region were used to benefit the British empire.
