When we talk about only one person, one animal, one place and thing, the noun is in singular form.

Example

I have one hat.
Look at the tree.
Sofia is a girl.
My grandmother has a cat.

However, if we talk about more than one person, more than one animal, more than one place or more than one thing, the noun is in plural form. The noun usually has a s or es added to it.

Example

I have two books
Look at the trees.
Rodia has three pencils.
Alia saw four teachers on her way to school.
The birds are flying.
