Content

Nationalism is a belief or sentiment that promotes the interests of a particular nation, especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation’s sovereignty over its homeland. Nationalists, on the other hand, are individuals or groups who actively promote and defend the interests of their nation. In Nigeria, nationalism movements have played a significant role in the country’s history, shaping its political and social landscape.

Comprehension Passage: Nationalism in Nigeria can be traced back to the early 20th century, when the country was under British colonial rule. At the time, many Nigerians began to feel a sense of national identity and began to demand greater autonomy and self-rule. In the 1940s and 1950s, various nationalist movements emerged, such as the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) and the Action Group (AG).

These movements advocated for independence and self-government, and their efforts eventually led to Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

However, nationalism sentiment in Nigeria has not always been peaceful. The country has experienced periods of ethnic and religious tension, and some nationalist movements have been accused of promoting divisive and discriminatory ideologies. Furthermore, the military coups and dictatorship that plagued Nigeria in the past century were also influenced by nationalism sentiment.

Despite these challenges, nationalism sentiment in Nigeria has played a vital role in the country’s political and social development. Nationalists have fought for the rights and autonomy of their people, and have played a significant role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
