The Japa Syndrome In Nigeria (LASUTH CASE)

The management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has reported that the hospital has lost about 150 nurses due to what is being referred to as “Japa syndrome” in the past three years, which seems to refer to the migration of health workers to other countries. The Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Professor Adetokunbo Fabamwo, has reported that the hospital’s exit replacement policy has ensured that LASUTH is not heavily affected by this mass resignation of nurses. However, he also reported that recently there have been fewer applications for positions of nurses and resident doctors in the hospital. To address this issue, the hospital has recruited double qualified nurses and engaged some retired nurses on a contract basis to fill the gaps. To reduce medical tourism, the hospital has upgraded many of its departments to offer tertiary services. Additionally, the hospital is working on the expansion of its Surgical Emergency Unit, Psychiatric Unit and Resident Doctors’ quarters.
