BASIC MOVEMENTS IN DANCE

Dance is a fun way to express ourselves through movement. Just like we have different words in our language, we also have different movements in dance that we can use to tell a story or show our feelings.

Here are some basic movements in dance that you can try:

  1. Step – This is when you lift one foot off the ground and place it back down again. You can step forward, backward, or to the side.
  2. Hop – This is when you jump off one foot and land on the same foot.
  3. Leap – This is when you jump off one foot and land on the other foot.
  4. Turn – This is when you pivot on one foot and turn around.
  5. Twist – This is when you rotate your upper body from side to side.
  6. Shake – This is when you move a body part quickly back and forth, like your head or your hips.
  7. Clap – This is when you bring your hands together to make a sound.

Now, let’s put these movements together to make a short dance sequence. Try this:

  1. Step forward with your right foot
  2. Hop on your right foot
  3. Turn around
  4. Step backward with your left foot
  5. Leap onto your right foot
  6. Twist your upper body to the right
  7. Clap your hands twice

Great job! You just created your own dance sequence using some basic dance movements. Keep practicing and exploring new movements to add to your dance vocabulary.

Meaning of time, space, effort and mood in choice of dance

In dance, there are four important elements that dancers use to create their movements and performances. These elements are time, space, effort, and mood.

  1. Time – Time in dance refers to the way movements are timed or sequenced in relation to the music. For example, a fast and upbeat song may inspire quick, energetic movements, while a slower song may inspire more fluid and graceful movements.
  2. Space – Space in dance refers to the way movements are shaped and placed in the performance space. For example, a dancer may move across the stage in a straight line or in a zigzag pattern, or they may stay in one spot and use different levels, such as crouching down or leaping high.
  3. Effort – Effort in dance refers to the amount of energy and force used in each movement. For example, a dancer may use sharp, sudden movements to show strength and power, or they may use soft, flowing movements to show grace and fluidity.
  4. Mood – Mood in dance refers to the emotional tone or atmosphere of the performance. For example, a dance may be happy and joyful, sad and mournful, or mysterious and suspenseful.

Here are some examples of how these elements can be used in different styles of dance:

  1. In ballet, dancers use precise and delicate movements that are timed to the music. They often use graceful arm and leg movements to create beautiful shapes and lines in the space.
  2. In hip hop, dancers often use sharp, quick movements that are timed to the beat of the music. They may use strong, forceful movements to show power and attitude, and they often use the space around them to create dynamic group formations.
  3. In contemporary dance, dancers often use fluid, continuous movements that are timed to the music. They may use the space in unpredictable ways, moving in and out of different levels and directions. They often use effort to show the emotional quality of the dance, such as using heavy, grounded movements to show sadness or light, airy movements to show joy.
  4. In a folk dance, the movements may be more structured and repetitive, with a focus on cultural traditions and group participation. The movements may be timed to the rhythm of traditional music and may use the space in a way that reflects the cultural context of the dance.

By using time, space, effort, and mood, dancers can create unique and expressive performances that convey a wide range of emotions and meanings.
