Foreign Musical Instruments

The piano is also a foreign instrument that was brought to Nigeria by Europeans. It is often used in Nigerian music for its ability to play melody, harmony, and rhythm at the same time.
  3. Trumpet: The trumpet is a brass instrument that is played by blowing air through the mouthpiece and buzzing the lips into a cup-shaped mouthpiece. It is often used in Nigerian music for its ability to play loud, high-pitched notes. The trumpet was brought to Nigeria by European military bands.
  4. Saxophone: The saxophone is a woodwind instrument that is played by blowing air through a reed and into a mouthpiece. It is often used in Nigerian music for its ability to play smooth, flowing melodies. The saxophone was also brought to Nigeria by Europeans.
  5. Drums: Drums are percussion instruments that are played by striking or beating them with sticks or hands. These drums originated in Africa but have been adopted and modified by other cultures, including Europeans.

So, these are some foreign musical instruments that are played in Nigeria. Even though they are not originally from Nigeria, they have become an important part of Nigerian music and culture.

Lesson Presentation

Title: Categorising Musical Instruments

Grade level: 4th grade

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to categorize musical instruments based on their features and how they are played.
  • Students will be able to identify examples of different types of musical instruments.
  • Students will understand the differences between traditional and foreign musical instruments.

Materials:

  • Pictures of various musical instruments from different categories
  • Chart paper
  • Markers

Procedure:

Introduction:

  1. Greet the students and introduce the topic of categorizing musical instruments.
  2. Ask the students if they have ever played a musical instrument before and if they can name any instruments they know.

Body: 3. Explain the different categories of musical instruments – stringed, wind, percussion, keyboard, electronic, and traditional instruments.

  1. Show pictures of musical instruments from each category and have the students identify the category they belong to.
  2. Discuss each category and give examples of different instruments in each one.
  3. Have the students work in pairs or small groups to come up with additional examples of instruments in each category.
  4. Ask the students which category of musical instruments is most commonly used in Nigeria.
  5. Explain the concept of traditional instruments and give examples of traditional instruments in Nigeria.
  6. Discuss the differences between traditional and foreign musical instruments.
  7. Have the students share any experiences they may have had with traditional or foreign musical instruments.
