Current Trends:

• Many eight-year-olds avoid basic chores like making their beds.
• Some ten-year-olds rely on maids or “caring mums” for tasks such as clearing the table or washing dishes.
• Drivers often carry children’s bags, and children may see this as normal rather than learning responsibility.
• Manual tasks like laundry are increasingly handled by others, with children not engaging in these activities.
• Children often wake up to watch TV and are allowed to stay up late, while they are told not to read late at night.

Consequences:

• There is a growing trend where children, despite being in expensive schools, lack motivation and discipline, leading to poor academic results.
• Teenagers may be unable to cook simple meals or handle daily responsibilities due to a lack of practical experience.
• Some children resort to cheating in exams, with parents sometimes bribing teachers or seeking unethical shortcuts.
• Disrespectful behavior towards adults is often overlooked, with excuses made for such conduct.

The Impact of Overindulgence: When parents prevent their children from facing responsibilities and challenges, they inadvertently set them up for regret. There are two pains in life: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. By avoiding discipline, parents are preparing their children for future disappointments.

Parental Reflection:

• Consider if securing jobs or businesses for your children without instilling discipline is truly beneficial. Would a lack of responsibility and poor work ethic be acceptable in your company?
• Reflect on how past generations, who combined work with schooling, produced well-rounded individuals.
