The study of the 34th and 35th Hadith of an-Nawawi’s collection

The 34th and 35th Hadith in an-Nawawi’s collection are two important sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that provide guidance for Muslims in their daily lives.

Here is the Arabic text, English translation, and lesson commentary for each Hadith:

34th Hadith: Arabic text: “ان الحلال بين وان الحرام بين وبينهما مشتبهات لا يعلمها كثير من الناس فمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه ومن وقع في الشبهات كراع يرعى حول الحمى يوشك أن يواقعها”

English translation: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know about. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honor, and whoever falls into doubtful matters falls into the unlawful, like a shepherd who grazes his flock too close to the private property of someone else and is likely to cause his flock to graze there.”

Lesson commentary:

This Hadith teaches us that in Islam, there are clear boundaries between what is allowed (halal) and what is forbidden (haram). However, there are also gray areas (mashboohat) where it’s not always clear whether something is allowed or not. The Hadith encourages us to avoid these gray areas and to stay away from things that might be doubtful. This is important because if we fall into doubtful matters, we might end up doing something that is forbidden and this will harm our religion and our honor.

Example application:

A practical example of this Hadith is when a Muslim is not sure whether a food item contains any forbidden ingredients or not. To be safe, they should avoid eating it and choose something else that they are certain is halal.

35th Hadith: Arabic text: “لا ضرر ولا ضرار”

English translation: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.”

Lesson commentary: This Hadith teaches us that in Islam, it’s important to avoid causing harm to others and to refrain from seeking revenge or retaliating against someone who has harmed us. Instead, we should focus on doing good deeds and treating others with kindness and compassion.

Example application: A practical example of this Hadith is when a Muslim sees someone being bullied or mistreated. Instead of joining in or turning a blind eye, they should speak up and try to help the person being harmed. They should also try to resolve conflicts peacefully without causing harm to anyone
