Meaning and Benefits of Farming 

Farming is the cultivation of land and rearing of animals for man’s use. It involves tilling the land, ploughing, and making ridges for proper growth of crops. Farming also involves taking care of livestock like cattle, goats, or sheep in order to get the best produce like meat or milk from them.

 

Types of Farming

1. Substance farming : This type of farming makes farmers to provide for what will sustain himself and members of his family only.

Crops that are cultivated by substance farmers 

The farmers produce staple crops like

  • yam,
  • rice
  • beans,
  • millet,
  • or maize that his family can feed on.

 

Tools used by substance farmers 

Substance farming is done on a small scale level and he makes use of simple farm tools like

  • hoe,
  • cutlass,
  • spade,
  • shovel,
  • rake or
  • watering can.

 

 

2. Commercial farming : This type of farming is done by Farmers on a very large scale for business purpose. The farmers provide what he will be able to sell and make huge money and profit. This type of farming needs large hectares of land.

Crops that are cultivated by commercial farmers. 

The commercial farmers produce cash crops like

  • coffee,
  • cocoa,
  • timber, or
  • palm that they can easily sell and make profit.

 

Tools used by commercial farmers. 

Since commercial farming is done on a very large scale, the farmers will need large equipment to get his job done. Equipment that are needed by large scale commercial farmers are

  • Tractor
  • Plough
  • Harrow
  • Harvester
  • Planter
  • Harrower
