Classification according to Lifespan

Lifespan refers to the number of years a crop is able to life or survive before death.

Crops can be grouped according to their life span as follows: annuals, biennials and perennials.

Annuals

These are plants that perform their entire life cycle from seed to flower to seed within a single growing season.  They are crops which grow and mature within one year . All roots, stems and leaves of the plant die annually. Examples are lettuce, spinach, melon, maize, rice, wheat, groundnut, cowpea, cotton

Annual crops are crops that grow and live for about one year. Many vegetables belong to this group. Examples include tomato, Amaranthus, okra, onion and carrot. Other crops in this group are yam, maize, rice, groundnut, millet, garden egg, sorghum, cassava and potato.

Biennials

These are plants which require two years to complete their life cycle. They are crops which grow and mature within two years. Examples are onions, cassava, pepper, ginger, carrots, and cabbage

Biennial crops are crops that live for two years after germination and produce seeds or fruits in the second year. Examples are castor oil, pepper, alligator pepper, plantain, banana, sugarcane, pineapple and pawpaw.

Perennials

These are crops that persist for many growing seasons.

They are those crops that grow and mature in more than two years.

Examples are cashew trees, palm trees, and banana trees.

Perennial crops are plants or crops that live and produce for more than two years after germination.

There are two types of perennial crops
Woody perennials that live for 3-10years e.g. paw-paw
Herbaceous Perennials that live 30-80 years e.g. Cocoa, oil palm, mango, orange, rubber etc.

Examples of such crops are oil palm, cocoa, mango, citrus, guava and kola.

Presentation

The topic is presented step by step

Step 1:

The class teacher revises the previous topics

Step 2.

He introduces the new topic

Step 3:

The class teacher allows the pupils to give their own examples and he corrects them when the needs arise

Conclusion

The class teacher wraps up or concludes the lesson by giving out short notes to summarize the topic that he or she has just taught.

The class teacher also goes round to make sure that the notes are well copied or well written by the pupils.

He or she does the necessary corrections when and where the needs arise.
