Functions of Civil organisations in Nigeria

1. They promote positive changes in the society
2. They protect the fundamental human rights of their members and that of every body in the country
3. They serve as watchdog to government in power
4. They help government in policy formation that will lead to improved and better lifestyles for everybody in the society
5. They advise government officials on how to formulate best policies for the betterment of everybody in the society
6. They ensure that the principle of check and balance is practiced by the three arms of government.
7. At times members of organized civil organizations organize rallies or campaigns to press home their demands
8. They give government officials important information in respect of how well to direct the affairs of the country
9. They educate members of the public by organizing seminars, symposiums or rallies
10. Social civil organizations pursue social, economic and financial transformation of their members

Problems of Civil Organizations in Nigeria 

1. Corruption
2. Ethnicity and Tribalism
3. Civil disobedience to constituted authorities
4. Unapproved and unorganized Rallies and campaigns may lead to shooting or looting
5. At times members of Civil Societies are detained for so long without trials
