Farm Structures Agricultural Science JSS 2 Second Term Lesson Notes

Farm Structures

Farm structures are simple constructions that make certain operations easier on the farm.

Types of Farm Structures:

  1. Dwelling House: This is where the farmer and their family live.
  2. Crops and Seed Storage Structures: These include silos, barns, cribs, bins, and rhombus for storing crops and seeds.
    • Silo: A big cylindrical steel container used for storing grains like maize, millet, and wheat.
    • Barn: A temporary structure for storing yams, grass, etc.
    • Cribs: Grain structures for storing and drying maize with cobs, made of wire gauze and plants.
    • Bins: Small, movable plastic containers for storing dried grains.
    • Rhombus: Made of clay or dry grasses, used for storing grains.
  3. Production Structures: These include fish ponds, battery cages for egg production, rabbit hutches, and paddocks for grazing animals.
  4. Processing House: These structures are used for processing farm produce, such as feed milling and abattoirs.
  5. Irrigation and Drainage Structures: These include systems for supplying and removing water on the farm.
  6. Waste Pit: A large pit dug out for disposing of farm waste.

These structures play crucial roles in organizing and managing farm activities effectively.
