Reading A newspaper (Recognizing the features of the newspaper such as headlines, keywords, graphics, pictures captions, and so on)
Lesson Plan: Reading a Newspaper
Objective: Students will be able to identify and understand the various features of a newspaper, including headlines, keywords, graphics, pictures, and captions.
Materials:
- Several copies of a newspaper
- Handouts with examples of each feature (headlines, keywords, graphics, pictures, captions)
- Pen or pencil
Warm-Up:
- Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever read a newspaper before. If so, ask them what they liked about it and what they found confusing or difficult to understand. If not, ask them if they have ever seen a newspaper before and what they noticed about it.
- Discuss with students the purpose of a newspaper and why people might read it.
Direct Instruction:
- Next, introduce the concept of newspaper features and explain that these are specific elements that make up a newspaper and help to convey information to the reader.
- Show students the handouts with examples of each feature and discuss each one in turn, explaining what each feature is and how it is used in a newspaper.
- As you go through the handouts, have students look for examples of each feature in the newspaper copies you have provided. Encourage them to pay attention to the layout and design of the newspaper as well.
Guided Practice:
- Divide students into small groups and give each group a copy of the newspaper. Have them work together to identify and label the different newspaper features on their copies.
- As they work, circulate around the room to provide support and guidance as needed.
Independent Practice:
- Give students a list of questions or prompts related to the newspaper features they have learned about. Have them use their copies of the newspaper to find the answers or complete the prompts. Examples might include:
- “Find an example of a headline and explain what it is telling the reader.”
- “Look for a picture with a caption and describe what the picture is showing.”
- “Find an example of a graphic and explain what information it is presenting.”
Closure:
- Review the different newspaper features with the class and ask students to share any examples they found during independent practice.
- Ask students to reflect on the importance of these features in a newspaper and how they help to convey information to the reader.
Assessment:
- Collect students’ completed handouts and use them to assess their understanding of the different newspaper features.
- Alternatively, you could have students create their own newspaper articles, incorporating the various features they have learned about
