What is a valedictory speech?

A valedictory speech is a speech that is given by someone, most especially the head or leader of a graduating class, group or team. It is done to appreciate the effort of the people, members of staff, friends, relatives, parents or colleagues that have contributed in one way or the other to the success of the academic courses of feats that someone has just achieved. Normal protocols are always followed when given kudos to whom they deserve.

Steps to take when writing a valedictory speech for graduation ceremony

  1. Make jottings or short  write up of what you want to say or talk about on that day.
  2. Plan, practice and rehearse. Yes. You may need to rehearse but that does not mean that you will have to learn by heart everything words for words. You may tell you English teachers to assist you withe the tenses so that your write up is not made bad with wrong use of tense.
  3. Failure to plan is planning to fail. Practice leads to perfection and the possibility of making mistakes is reduced.
  4. Make sure that your speech is short, powerful, precise and on point. Make use of powerful quotations from good speakers to drive home your points and don’t forget to give credits to authors of quotes that you have used when preparing and presenting your own speech
  5. Speak up. Make your voice audible when giving out your speech, after all your speech is meant to bee heard and not to be seen. Use vivid graphic illustrations and powerful adjectives to make your points come alive

  • Founders day
  • Cultural day
  • Inter House sports

Example of a valedictory speech

Good day Mr Chairman, members of the board, The head teacher, members of the teaching and non teaching staff, parents, relatives, family members and friends.

It is with great joy and happiness that I welcome you all to the 7th graduation ceremony of Edu Delight Tutors Primary School. My name is Ajibola Johnson and I am the head boy and I am the head boy of this graduating set of 2022.

Well, how time flies, just like yesterday when I enrolled in this school as a pupil in Basic one, then I was just six years old. I cried as it was my first day in school. Everybody and everything looks so odd and strange. The new school, the new class, and of course the new faces of teachers and strangers that will soon become friends.

Thank God, because here we are now. Well taught, groomed and nurtured to be the best in academics and morals . How time flies. To Almighty God be the glory.

Flowers, they say do not grow on stones. Flowers germinate on fertile land, So I will like to seize this opportunity to say a very big thank you to those people who have helped us this far during our period of learning at Edu Delight Tutors.

First and foremost, I will like to say a very big thank you to our own mother, mentor, guide and school administrator, in person of Mrs Ogbeta Ajibola Johnson, we say a very big thank you to you Ma. You are a mother in need and in deed.

I also use this opportunity to appreciate all members of staff, both teaching and non teaching, the drivers, the nannies, the cooks, the bursar, the nurse and the school security guards. I say a very big thank you to you all.

And finally to my fellow graduands, I wish to implore you to do more. This is just the beginning of greater things to happen in our lives. Work harder, learn smarter and become a better you.

Thank you all
