Content

Data are unprocessed facts that have no meaning to the user until after computer processing. Data are inputs to the computer.

Examples of data

1. Numbers;1,2,3,….., ( these are data that are made up of just figures, numbers or numerals)

2. Alphabets;a,b,c,...., ( These are just letters of the alphabets)

3. Symbols;N,%,+,-,…. ( They are made up of symbols and special letters) .

4. Alphanumeric eg 13 Ajibola Street (this contains both alphabet and number.. For instance the home address of someone)

What is information

Information is a processed fact that has meaning to the user.This is what comes out after data have been processed.Information is an output from the computer.

Examples of information;#10,name,80% etc.

Sources of information

The following are sources of information:

i.Radio

ii.Television

iii.Newspapers

iv.Computers

v.Magazines

vi.Notice boards

 

How do we gather data

  1. By counting using counters and also by measuring using tapes
  2. We can gather data by observing the situation at hand and making necessary records
  3. By using questionnaire
  4. Through questions or interviews
  5. Filling of online forms or offline forms

What is information?

Information is processed data. It is a form of data that some actions or activities have been applied to in order to aid decision making

 

What are the differences between Data and Information 

  • Data is the raw fact while information is processed
  • Data is not used for decision making but information can be used for decision making.
  • Data has no inherent meaning while information does
  • Data must be processed while information is already processed
