One of the most difficult aspects of helping drug addicts is understanding the complex psychology behind their addictions. Many people become addicted to drugs or alcohol as a way to self-medicate mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. Others may be drawn to drugs or alcohol out of a desire to escape from the stress and hardships of everyday life. Sometimes addiction is simply a choice, driven by peer pressure or a desire for thrills or excitement.
