Subject : BASIC Science and Technology

Topic : The Force Of Friction

Class : Primary 6 / Basic 6

Term :Third Term

Week :Week 6

Instructional Materials :

Online materials

Textbooks

Previous Knowledge :

The pupils have been taught meaning and types of forces

Behavioural Objectives :  At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to

  1. Explain frictional Force
  2. Say the effects of the force of friction
  3. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of friction
  4. Mention diverse ways of reducing friction

Content :

The force that opposes free movement on rough surface is known as the frictional forces

The force of friction opposes free movement

It is easily noticed in our day to day activities because friction enables movement. When you are pushed by your friend, you are able to stop because of the frictional force between the sole of your shoes and the rough surface of the ground

Effects of Friction

  1. Friction enables movement

  2. It makes objects to stop

  3. It may lead to wear and tear

  4. The force of friction may produce undesirable heat

  5. It slows down the speed of moving objects

  6. Friction is needed to effect the acceleration of speed of moving objects

Importance or Advantages of Friction

  1. The force of friction led to the discovery of fire when two rough surfaces of stones were strike together and a spark of fire was made
  2. Friction enable free movement and prevent us from skidding off the road

  3. The force of friction is applied on brakes of vehicles and this makes vehicles to stop and prevent unnessary accident

  4. The grinding stone used by our parents in the olden days was made possible by the force of friction

  5. The rough surfaces of stones were used to sharpen the edges of knives in the olden days. It is an advantage of friction

Disadvantages or Demerits of Friction

  1. It may lead to undesired and unwanted heat
  2. Severe unchecked, unwanted and unwanted heat may lead to unwanted fire outbreak

  3. Most vehicles are burnt up on third mainland bridge during terrible and pathetic traffic gridlock becomes most of these vehicles develop over heating which lead to fire outbreak

  4. Friction leads to wear and tear of most parts of machines or vehicles. This wear and tear is easily noticed on the sole of our shoes that we have been using for some times

Various or Diverse Ways of Reducing Frictions

We can reduce friction in the following ways

  1. By applying lubricant
  2. By applying grease

3.  By making use of gear, ball or sockets

Presentation

The topic is presented step by step

Step 1: The class teacher revises the previous topics

Step 2. He introduces the new topic

Step 3: The class teacher allows the pupils to give their own examples and he corrects them when needs arise

Class Activities

Tell the pupils to rub their two hands together and tell them to tell you what they observe

Evaluation :

  1. What is friction
  2. Mention two advantages of frictional Force

  3. Mention three disadvantages of friction

4.  Mention two effects of frictional Force

Conclusion :

He gives a brief note on the topic and he goes round to mark

Assignment :

Read about the force of gravity
