Section A: Comprehension Passage

Why the hippopotamus lives in water

Many years ago, the hippopotamus, whose name was Osaritin, was one of the biggest kings on land. He was second to the elephant. The hippopotamus had seven wives whom he loved very well. They in turn loved him very much and were all very faithful to him.

From time to time, the hippopotamus would organize a big feast for all his subjects, that is, those that he ruled. Many of his subjects looked forward to this feast because there was always so much to eat and drink, with a lot of dancing and other funs and merriment.

On one such occasion, the hippopotamus called his subjects together and said, very time you assemble here, you eat my food and drink my dinks and dance to my bands without even knowing my real name.

Today , no one will eat my food and drink my drinks without first of all telling me my name.

Each animal looked at the other and they all shook their head. In truth, none of them 5really knew the name of the hippopotamus. As they could not guess his  name, they all went home disappointed, but the tortoise remained behind. He asked the hippopotamus what he would do for him if he guessed his name correctly. The hippopotamus promised the tortoise that if by chance he was able to tell him his real name, he, the hippopotamus would leave his house and go back to the river and stay there with all his wives. All the property he owned, including his house would become tortoise’s.

The tortoise scratched his throat many times. This was a good offer, he thought and already the tortoise started to see himself as the owner of the hippopotamus’s beautiful house, but first, he had to find out the real name of the hippopotamus.
