CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN AGRICULTURE

Agriculture deals with rearing of animals and planting of crops for man’s use. It also involves all other farming activities like marketing, packaging, transportation, storage and sales that are perform in order to make the final farm produce get to the final consumers. Agriculture is wide and offers various job opportunities for young school leavers to make a career out of it.

The following are the various branches of agriculture that could be of career choice for young school leavers

4. Animal science

10. Veterinary medicine

1. Agricultural extension : This is mainly concerned with teaching and helping farmers especially small scale farmers in rural areas, to improve their agricultural systems and practices. This would enable them produce more and improved better crops. The farmers’ problems are also carried through extension service to research stations for solutions. The people who are trained to carry out agricultural extension service are called Agricultural Extension Officers or agents.

2. Agricultural engineering : This is concerned with the study of farm machineries and their uses. It also includes the maintenance of those machines and implements used on the farm, as well as construction, fabrication, repairs, use and maintenance of farm structures and buildings. A specialist in this area is called Agricultural Engineer.

3. Agricultural economics : These are the people that study how to effectively and efficiently manage farm resources in order to get the best out of the. They deal on how to run the business of agriculture profitable by looking at the area of production, sales and marketing.

4. Animal science : This aspect of agricultural science deals with the production of livestock, piggery and Fishery. Job opportunities that are available under animal science are zoologist, biologist, or animal nutrition. A person whose specialist is on animal science is called animal scientist.

5. Crop science : Crop Science is the study of agricultural issues and challenges that are related to how crops are cultivated, nurture to maturity, harvested and stored for sales. It also includes resource that are used with sustainable production of food, feed, fibre and fuel. production, processing and marketing of high quality food and non-food products through crop production.top graduates work as agricultural and biological scientists and also as research staff of agriculture-based institutions at both national and international levels.

6. Soil science : This branch of agriculture deals with the study of soil structure, formation, texture and nutrients. This branch of agriculture science is concerned with the formation, nature, ecology, and classification of soil. A soil scientist is a qualified professional who evaluates, checks, examines, and interprets soils and soil-related information to understand soil resources. He or she also advises farmers on soil nutrients and the best of crops to cultivate on a particular soil

7. Forestry : Forestry is the branch of agriculture that deals with forest and its resources. Someone they studies forest and its resources is called a forester. It is the science or practice of planting, managing, conserving, repairing maintaining, and caring for forest and its resources.

8. Horticulture : Horticulture is the aspect of agricultural science that deals with flower cultivation, grooming and caring.. People can make career out of horticulture by growing and selling beautiful flowers that can be used for decoration.

9. Fisheries : Fishery is the branch of agriculture that deals with fish production. Career opportunities like fish manager,, Fishery and aquatic farm worker, Aquaculturist., Aquatic Biologist.,Biological Technician., Customs Inspector Environmental Specialist,  Hatchery Manager etc.

10. Veterinary medicine : A veterinary doctor is the doctor of the animals. He is a doctor that specialized in taking care of animals and poultry. He treats animals in respect of animal reproductive health, injuries, diseases or surgeries.
