Content : 

The Rabbit is very rich in protein. It is a good source of protein for the farmers. The rabbit is a hopping creature with two long ears and a short furry tail. A fully grown male rabbit is called buck, the female called doe and the young one called kit. The rabbit has only one stomach compartment which means it is a monogastric animal. Rabbits are very sensitive to dirty environments. Their environment must be kept clean always

Breeds of rabbits

There are different breeds of rabbits like

  • Fleming giant,
  • chinchilla,
  • angora

 

Factors to consider when choosing rabbits for rearing. 

What to look for when making decisions on production of rabbits as livestock

  • Rapid growth
  • Body weight
  • Resistance to diseases or infection
  • Breeding or reproductive age
  • Quality of meat produced.

 

Housing requirements of rabbits

  •  Cages may be built to house the rabbits
  • The floor of the cages may be made of Materials that are easily removed or replaced.
  • The cages must be kept neat, clean and dry at all times.
  • Too many rabbits must not be put in a cage at the same time.
  • Provision for proper ventilation must be done.

 

Feeding of rabbits 

Rabbits may be fed with any of these food materials

  • Dried grass
  • Hay
  • Carrots
  • Leaves
  • Cereals
  • Grains
  • Grasses
  • Vegetables
  • Pawpaw peels
