Livestock Production 

This is the rearing of animals for sales or consumption

 

Classification of Animals 

1. Ruminant animals : These are animals that chew their cud. They have four stomach compartments which are rumen, reticulum, omasun and abomasun.

Examples of ruminant animals are

  • Goats
  • Cows
  • Sheep
  • Camels

 

2. Non ruminant animals : These are animals that do not chew their cud. They have one stomach compartment.

Examples of non ruminant animals are

  • Rabbit
  • Dog
  • Pig
  • Chicken
  • Cat

 

Other classification of animals based on where they live 

1. Terrestrial animals or land animals eg cat, dog, goats, pigs, rabbits

 

2. Aquatic animals or water animals eg octopus, whale, tilapia, catfish etc

 

3. Aerial animals or air animals eg ostrich, dove, parrots, eagle etc
