CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION

Head Teachers, Heads of Departments and Principals alike must pay serious attention to how teachers manage their class. This is called class management.

Class Management refers to all the things a teacher does in order to organize his or her students. This may be in terms of

entry behavior,

time allocated to each lesson ,

Sitting space and arrangement

set of effective rules for targeted teaching

and instructional materials or reference materials

so that teaching and learning can take place optimally. In order to be effective, teachers must acquire excellent class management skills.

Teachers must realize that the fact that Teaching has taken place, does not mean that Learning has also been done effectively

OBJECTIVES OF CLASS MANAGEMENT

1. To foster student involvement and cooperation in all classroom activities.

2. To establish a conducive and productive learning environment.

3. To achieve greater confidence and less stress on the teacher.

4. To maintain order in the classroom at all times.

5. To maintain discipline and decorum in the classroom at all times.

6. To organize lesson time in such a way that all students get equal attention and opportunities to ask and answer questions.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A WELL MANAGED CLASSROOM

1. High level of students’ involvement with academic work by being responsive and interactive during lessons

2. Clear students’ expectations. The students know exactly what is expected of them.

3. Teacher’s desk is well organized, orderly and tidy.

4. Students’ desks and workplaces are orderly and tidy.

5. Students work with realistic noise level in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.

6. Time is used effectively and maximally.

7. There are well- planned displays, teaching aids and examples.

8. There are clearly spelt out rules and regulations guiding the conduct of students in the class.

9. Corrections, class-work and home-work are checked consistently.

10. Every student has a sense of belonging – No one feels left out.No child is left behind.

11. Discipline is commensurate to the offence. Pupils are not punished but are corrected in love.

12. There are well laid out aisles and space for easy movement by the teacher.

13. There are no safety hazards. Nothing that can lead to accident, injury or mishaps.

14. Materials are well arranged in an organized and safe way.

15. There is proper and adequate lighting and ventilation.

16. The teacher has all he needs to teach well prepared lesson notes, Diary, Scheme of work. Examples, Teaching aids, questions to be asked.
