WEEK 1

Geography of Africa — Location, Position, Size and Political    Divisions

Location: Africa is located between latitude 35°S and 37°N of the equator and longitude 20°W and 50°E of the Greenwich Meridian. Size: Africa is the second largest continent in the world after Asia with a total land area of approximately 81 million square kilometres.

Political Division: Africa consists of 48 main countries, including some islands like Malagasy, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, etc. Class Activity: On a sketch map of Africa Locate: Longitudinal and Latitudinal location of Africa

Position: Africa is located between latitude 35°S and 37°N of the equator and longitude 20°W and 50°E of the Greenwich Meridian. Size: Africa is the second largest continent in the world after Asia with a total land area of approximately 81 million square kilometres.

Africa is located in the Northern Hemisphere, making it closer to the North Pole than the equator. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and Indian Ocean to the north, as well as by South Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent itself has a long coastline that spans over 20,000 miles along these bodies of water.

The continent is made up of 54 individual countries, which are divided into three main regions: North Africa, West Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Each region has a distinctive climate and geography that makes it unique from the other regions.

North Africa consists mainly of the Nile Delta and Nile River Basin, as well as a desert that spans across Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. West Africa focuses on the Niger and Senegal Rivers, as well as the rainforests of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana. Finally, Sub-Saharan Africa is home to many vast savannas, tropical forests, and plateaus that make up a large portion of the continent’s interior.

Overall, Africa is an incredibly diverse continent with a wide range of geographical features and climates. Despite its size, it is still relatively unknown to many people around the world, and offers endless opportunities for exploration and discovery!
