2. COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

Interestingly, Lyanda was not totally disappointed by the sheer display of self-centeredness of Mr. Ballie, his master, who connived with the fraudsters to raise the spirit and dash the hope of this ambitious and enterprising young officer. Of course, he knew his boss like the palm of his hand, very callous to the extreme.

However, he erroneously wrapped himself in a delusion of grandeur, presuming that he deserved maximum protection from his superintendent, being his loyal close aide.

In no time, the rumor of Mr. Ballie’s maltreatment of his personal assistant became rife, but none of the co-workers was bold enough to ask questions or protest against this overt inhumanity to humanity. “Wonders shall never end. Why would the manager invite con men to meet Lyanda?” a staff member querulously murmured and consciously looked around to be sure his soliloquy was free from eavesdropping. Everyone was aware that the fear of Mr. Ballie was the beginning of wisdom. After all, the agony of losing a job was better imagined than experienced.

In one fell swoop, the police officers, having followed many false leads for the first four days of their preliminary investigation, arrested the criminals together with Mr. Ballie in their hideout and were summarily brought to book. Nostalgia rent the air as the co-workers did not only jubilate the sack of the devil but also mourned the pyrrhic justice for Lyanda, who was at the convalescent home recuperating from severe despondency occasioned by unrequited loyalty.

Nevertheless, the criminals were cooling off their heels behind bars.

3. SUMMARY

The teaching profession is one of the most underrated professions in Nigeria and does not receive the respect it truly deserves.

Teachers are poorly paid compared to professionals in fields such as medicine and banking, who are products of teachers. It is puzzling why the creators are valued less than the created. Unlike teachers, professionals in other fields are well-compensated and honored.

The situation is worsened by the fact that some students, who return to their alma mater for various documents, look down on teachers who now live less luxuriously. Additionally, parents sometimes react violently when teachers correct their children, which is both disheartening and harmful to teachers.

Consequently, many children avoid becoming teachers unless forced by circumstances, and even those who have a passion for teaching are often discouraged by the poor treatment of teachers in society.

The standard of living in Nigeria is such that many teachers cannot afford premium residential areas or desired cars. Teachers who should be given high status are instead treated poorly.

Despite these challenges, teachers should remain motivated because they are a nation’s greatest asset. The true reward for teachers is the satisfaction of shaping lives rather than material gain.
