Content :

CONTENT: (a) Principles of freehand sketching.
(b) Freehand sketching of hand tools used by builders and engineers e.g. hammers pliers, saws, trowels, callipers etc.

Sub-topic 1: PRINCIPLES OF FREEHAND SKETCHING

What is free hand sketching?
Freehand sketching is the method of drawing figure without the use of precision instruments such as scale rule. This practice includes both pictorial and orthographic sketches of engineering components, electrical circuits and plan layouts. The principles of free hand sketching are hereby explained below:
(i) The paper should not be too large and should not be fixed on a drawing board.
(ii) Horizontal lines are better drawn from left to right noting the two end points. Do not replace the lines; finished lines must be hard and clean; use eraser as much as you need it but do not try to imitate mechanically drawn straight lines since slight ripples and deviations are slight part of freehand sketching.
(iii) Note the distinction between thick and thin lines, such as outlines/object lines, centre lines, dimension lines, hidden details line etc.
(iv) Angles are quite closely approximated. For right angles use vertical and horizontal lines on the square paper.
(v) For circles and arcs, use simple geometrical constructions. Draw the centre lines and two 450 radial lines, estimate the radius and draw the curve joining the points on the lines, smaller circles and arcs may be drawn without such constructions.

The class teacher also goes round to make sure that the notes are well copied or well written by the pupils.

He or she does the necessary corrections when and where  the needs arise.
