MATERIALS AND TOOLS NEEDED FOR HORTICULTURE PRACTICES

Materials:

  1. Soil – This is where the plants grow, and we need different types of soil depending on the type of plants we want to grow. Some plants prefer sandy soil, while others prefer clay soil.
  2. Fertilizer – This is a type of plant food that helps the plants grow strong and healthy. Fertilizer can be made from natural materials like compost or manure, or it can be synthetic, which means it is made in a laboratory.
  3. Mulch – This is a layer of material that is placed on top of the soil to help keep it moist and prevent weeds from growing. Mulch can be made from things like leaves, straw or wood chips.

Tools:

  1. Trowel – This is a small, handheld tool that is used for digging small holes in the soil. We use a trowel to plant seeds or seedlings.
  2. Pruning shears – These are special scissors that are used to trim and shape plants. We use pruning shears to cut off dead or damaged branches or to shape a plant into a certain shape.
  3. Watering can – This is a container that we use to water the plants. We fill the watering can with water and then pour it over the plants to give them the water they need to grow
  4. Garden Gloves – These are gloves made of a durable material such as leather or rubber that are worn to protect the hands from getting dirty or scratched when handling plants or soil. They are also used to protect the hands from thorns or other sharp objects that may be present on plants.
  5. Garden Fork – This is a tool with several curved tines that are used to loosen soil and remove weeds. The fork is pushed into the soil and then pulled back towards the gardener, which loosens the soil and removes any weeds that are present.
  6. Rake – A rake is a tool with a long handle and several tines that are used to remove debris such as leaves, twigs, or rocks from the soil. The rake is pulled across the ground in a back and forth motion to collect the debris and clear the soil.
  7. Hoe – A hoe is a tool that has a long handle and a flat blade that is used to remove weeds and break up soil. The blade is pushed into the soil and then pulled towards the gardener, which loosens the soil and removes any weeds that are present.
  8. Wheelbarrow – This is a small, one-wheeled cart that is used to transport soil, mulch, or other materials around the garden. It is pushed by hand and can be loaded up with heavy materials that would be difficult to carry by hand

The applications of each tool and material that are commonly used in horticulture

Materials:

  1. Soil – Used as a medium for growing plants. Different types of soil are used depending on the type of plants being grown.
  2. Fertilizer – Provides essential nutrients for plant growth and can be made from natural or synthetic materials.
  3. Mulch – Placed on top of soil to help retain moisture and prevent weeds from growing.

Tools:

  1. Trowel – Used for digging small holes in the soil for planting seeds or seedlings.
