The Local Government Area (LGA) is the smallest administrative unit in Nigeria. It is headed by a chairman who is directly elected by the people. There are 774 LGAs in Nigeria

The LGA headquarters is usually located in the town or city which serves as the commercial and administrative center for the area. The local government area is usually made up of smaller towns, villages and communities which are spread out over a large geographical area

The physical characteristics of an LGA can vary greatly depending on its location. For example, an LGA in the northern part of the country is likely to be much drier and more desert-like than an LGA in the south which is likely to be lush and green.

The economic activities of an LGA are also determined by its location. For example, an LGA in the oil-rich Niger Delta region is likely to have a very different economy to an LGA in the dry northern part of the country

Nigeria is divided into 36 states, each of which has its own capital. The federal capital territory (FCT) is not technically a state, but it is still administered by a government

The states are further divided into 774 LGAs. There are many different types of local government in Nigeria, but the most common are the ward system, the village system and the town council system

The ward system is the most decentralised form of local government. Each ward is administered by a democratically elected Ward Councillor. The village system is similar to the ward system, but each village is administered by a Village Headman who is appointed by the traditional ruler

The town council system is the most centralised form of local government. Each town is administered by a Town Council which is made up of Councillors who are elected by the people.

SUB-TOPIC 1: Local Government Headquarters

A local government area is formed by the combination of several towns and villages with similar physical and cultural features. Local government areas serve as third tier or level of government in Nigeria. There are 774 local government areas in Nigeria. Each of them has its administrative headquarters.

The local government area where the school is located can be easily known with the use of a map. A map is a drawing which shows the features of an area of land, sea or sky, usually on a flat surface. It may show roads, railways, buildings, rivers and other geographical features. It may also show political boundaries, such as countries, states or provinces.

The local government area can also be located by using GPS (Global Positioning System). This is a system that uses satellites to determine the location of a place on Earth. GPS can be used to find your way if you are lost, or to track the movement of someone or something.
