1. JOSEPH HAYDN (1732- 1809)
Joseph Haydn was an Austrian, born in Rohrau in 1732. He manifested his great musical talents in his boyhood. He joined the Vienna Choir School as a chorister and was taught by Porpora. Haydn was brilliant in his music career and later got employment from Prince Esterhazy- the wealthy and musical Hungarian Prince who had his own orchestra in his Estate.
His Achievements
1. Haydn became chief music director of Prince Esterhazy choir school.
2. He studied and developed himself in music composition for the orchestra .
3. He also developed the sonata and its form and established the best styles for the symphony and string quartet.
In 1790, his patron – Prince Esterhazy died . He then travelled to London in honour of the invitation of Johann Peter Salomon, a famous violinist. It was there he wrote his last twelve symphonies. (93- 104). Haydn was awarded a doctorate degree in music. He was popularly called Papa Haydn and known as “ The Father of the Sympnony” because of his immense contributions towards the development of symphony and his great output in symphony writing. Haydn died in 1809 at the age of 77.
HAYDN’ S MUSICAL WORKS
1. He wrote 104 Symphonies which have various nicknames such as Clock, Drum-roll, Farewell, Horn Signal, Lamentation etc.
2. He wrote 80 String Quartets, including The Emperor, The Sunrise, The Razor, The Frog etc.
3. He wrote Oratorios, These include “The Creation”, and “The seasons”.
4. He wrote two Operas, “Armida” and “The World of Moon”.
5. He wrote only one Cantata, “The Seven Words from the Cross”.
6. He wrote 53 Piano Sonatas.
