Once upon a time, there was a trader in Jebba who owned two large canoes. He had loaded them with heavy cargoes and was ready to begin his voyage downstream.

But he could not start because one of his boatmen was ill and he needed a man to take his place. At last he found someone He was tall and strong and a very good boatman. But he had never been on a long voyage before.

He came from a very small village near Pategi, on the Niger. “My name is Barom” he said, “they call me Baron, the quiet one”.

It was the right name for him; for he was very quiet. He did the work but he had so little to say.
